Nothern Sumatran - Wildlife

Sumatran Orang-utan - There are two sub-species of Orang-Utans that you can see on your holiday to South East Asia, one native to Borneo and one native to Sumatra. Both of these sub-species prefer to remain in the primary tropical rainforest and have a diet which principally consists of soft fruits including figs and mangos; if these are not present then they will also eat leaves, insects, bark, bird's eggs and sometimes even squirrels. The Sumatran Orang-Utan inhabits a remnant area of rainforest in the northwest of the island which is protected by the Gunung Leuser National Park.

Travellers have the opportunity to track the wild Orang-Utan through the primeval forests of Sumatra; spotting these distant relatives swinging through the jungle canopy above is a once in a lifetime experience; treks vary in degrees of toughness and can be done on a daily basis using the lodge as a base in the evenings; alternatively there is the possibility of camping out in natural caverns and tents in the rainforest for a number of days. For those less happy about trekking through the jungle there is also the opportunity to visit the nearby Bohorok Orang-Utan sanctuary at Bukit Lawang and instead do day sorties into the forest.

Pygmy Elephants - a unique opportunity to ride elephants bareback through the forest. These elephants have been reclaimed from zoos and poachers and are now used to patrol the forest region in order to monitor poaching levels. If you are lucky you will even have a chance to wash and swim with the elephants!
