Setam Lodge, Ranomafana National Park

Setam Lodge

Setam Lodge is set above the forested river valley, just inside Ranomafana National Park. Each of the 10 bungalows looks out from the hill on which they are perched, down to the river and to the spectacular rainforest below.

Ranomafana National Park was originally set up to preserve 2 of Madagascar’s endangered lemur species, the golden bamboo lemur and the greater bamboo lemur. So this 40,000 hectare area is great for spotting the majestic creatures, as well as being great for birding!

  • 20 rooms
  • No swimming pool
  • Children welcome
  • Great for finding lemurs

Style: A comfortable rainforest lodge with single storey bungalows.

Setting: Setam Lodge is surrounded by rainforest and sits on a hillside, close to the entrance of Ranomafana National Park, 40 miles east of Fianarantsoa and about 250 miles south-east of Antananarivo.

Accommodation & facilities: The 20 chalet style rooms are in 10 separate bungalows, with thatched roofs and welcoming yellow and wood panelled walls. Inside, the rooms are basic but comfortable and very clean. With either double or twin beds, a fan and 24 hour electricity. Rooms are ensuite with a shower and toilet and have simple décor; plain walls and wooden furniture. Private stone verandas are attached and have great views down to the river and over the surrounding rainforest, with seating for you to relax and absorb your surroundings. Rooms also have very good heaters which is useful for the cooler evenings during winter months.

The large restaurant and bar area, with lots of individual tables for private dining, makes the most out of its stunning surroundings with large glass windows, bringing in the outdoors as much as possible. This leads out onto a nice breakfast veranda, which has lots of comfortable seating and umbrellas for shade.

There is a laundry service available.

Dining: The restaurant serves good food in generous portions. Continental breakfasts are available in the mornings with fresh juice, bread, pastries and hot drinks. Guests can dine either in the restaurant or outside on the main terrace under shady umbrellas.

Activities: Walks from Setam Lodge into mountainous Ranomafana National Park offer hikers the chance to see a number of important and rare species of lemur, such as the golden bamboo lemur, red bellied and eastern grey bamboo lemur, as well as Milne-Edwards’ sifaka. It’s not just lemurs you will find here though; there are many different reptile species, a variety of different mammals and a huge variety of birds!

Child policy: Children of all ages are welcome but no facilities.
