Gabon Wildlife Safari Main Attractions
Gabon Wildlife Safaris, Gorilla Safaris and Forest Exploration
A variety of options are open to people travelling to Gabon; an up and coming but enthralling place for your wildlife holiday Gabon offers lowland gorillas, forest elephants, whales off the coastline, turtles and much more. Holidays in Gabon are still fairly basic when it comes to service levels etc however as you will see from below there is a host of exciting wildlife to be seen...
Langoue Bai - A place of unparalleled beauty; located in the heart of Gabon's rainforest Langoue Bai offers the adventurer the chance to encounter forest elephant grazing alongside lowland gorilla mixed amongst sitatunga and buffalo. The Bai, which is the pygmy word for a forest clearing, is approximately 1km long by 300m wide consisting of nourishing saline soil which lures the forest animals out into the open as we watch unnoticed from viewing platforms up in the tree line. Please note sightings of gorillas vary depending on the season.
Choice of accommodation is limited to Langoue Bai Camp, a rustic tented platform camp located in the middle of the forest.
Loango - Loango National Park created in 2002 on joining the Iguela and Petit Loango Reserves is an area of outstanding beauty combining a variety of different habitats including ocean, lagoon, forest and savannah. The choice of attractions varies depending on the season with whale spotting from July - October and the turtle season from mid November - mid January. Throughout the rest of the year one has the chance to see buffalo, crocodiles, elephants, hippo, chimpanzees and gorillas. From October through to March one will often see the larger mammals such as the forest elephant wondering along the beach, or if lucky the hippos surfing in the sea!
Accommodation is at Loango Lodge, a comfortable lodge overlooking the lagoon with hot water and air conditioning. Iguela Lodge also has a number of satellite camps from where you can explore the park in more depth.
Lope National Park - Home to 400 of the 680 bird species in Gabon - including the rare rock fowl - and approx. 60 different species of mammal including forest elephant, lowland gorilla, chimpanzee and mandrill. The Reserve has an estimated population of 1,350 mandrills (usually visible in July-August) and 3-5,00 lowland gorillas; whilst one makes every effort to track these primates they are fast moving and elusive and viewings are not guaranteed.
Accommodation is at Lope Hotel, a comfortable lodge located on the edge of the Ogooue River. From here travellers have access to Mikongo Camp from where one can do primate walks into the forest.
