Democratic Republic of Congo

Wildlife

The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the most diverse nations of Africa with some unique wildlife. We have tried to list some of these highlights below. Unfortunately due to the current security situation in the country mountain gorilla safaris and eastern lowland gorilla safaris are not possible.

Mountain gorilla -solely found in the Virunga Mountain range bordering Uganda and Rwanda. 740 mountain gorillas remain in the wild (they do not survive living in captivity). Mountain gorilla safaris are not advised in these areas.

Eastern Lowland gorilla - their main strong hold being in Kahuzi-Biega and Maiko National parks. Continually under threat from poaching and local militia movements. Gorilla tracking in these areas is not advised.

Bonobo - found in Central DRC the principal protected populations are in Salonga National Park and Luo Reserve, areas that are continually under threat from poachers and civil unrest and therefore bonobo safaris are not possible at this moment in time.

Chimpanzee - found throughout many forests in DRC.
