Democratic Republic of Congo - Overview
Eastern Lowland Gorilla Safaris and Holidays
40 times the size of Great Britain, an approximate population of 40 million with the largest number of national heritage sites of any country in Africa, DRC hosts an astonishing variety of wildlife. Virunga National Park is one of the most dramatic backdrops for a national park throughout the continent; bordering Uganda and Rwanda mountain gorillas are the main attraction. With the mountain gorillas in the Virungas and the Eastern Lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega, DRC has a variety of different opportunities for the traveller.
Aside from the gorillas DRC is also home to the closest relative of mankind, the Bonobo (pygmy chimpanzee). Differentiated from the more abundant chimpanzee by its more rounded head, longer legs and lighter build the bonobo has only limited protection in Salonga National Park and Luo Reserve in Central DRC. Known for their "make love not war" approach to life, bonobos are more socially active than other chimpanzees and will often use sexual relations as both a greeting and a way of reinforcing friendships!
Unfortunately due to security in the area World Primates Safaris does not at present run safaris and tours to DRC. The area is being monitored closely and it is hoped that we will be able to open operations in this area in the near future. Please contact us for further details.
What to Expect: Due to the sheer size of the country it is not easy to get around. When visiting the gorilla parks of eastern DRC it is advised to gain access from either Uganda or Rwanda as proximity to major international airports is far easier. The true heart of Africa, DRC offers the traveller some of the most spectacular scenery you will see in Africa and a true adventure. Travel however can be exasperating and travellers should expect last minute changes in their itineraries.
