Costa Rica Family Holidays
Tailormade Family Holidays to Tropical Costa Rica, in the Heart of Central America
In the heart of Central America, Costa Rica is a small country brimming with wildlife and a whole host of activities ideal for any family member. Whether you
want an action packed safari, climbing volcanoes and whizzing through canopies on zip lines, or just some time to relax on the beaches or walk through the jungles and rainforests admiring the colourful wildlife, Costa Rica is for you. Home to two thirds of all rainforest species and some of the weirdest and cutest fauna, children are bound to go home with memories that will last a lifetime.
Despite its small size, Costa Rica is packed full of diverse habitats and colourful flora and fauna, meaning that even a short break here can ensure a varied mix of what you can see and do. For those looking for wild activity, head to Pacuare River where you can partake in white-water rafting past banana plantations and towering volcanoes. Playa Tamarindo is a surfers dream with curling waves and spectacular breaks, or for a swim and some possible dolphin and whale sightings from the sand, Playa Unita is perhaps better for the youngest members of the family. Pozo Azul is an excellent site for all the family with horse-riding, white water rafting, rappelling, and biking as well as bird watching, a dairy farm and a butterfly farm.
A trip to Costa Rica wouldn’t be complete without heading into the jungle where you can hike to see macaws, toucans, tapirs, jaguars and iguanas. Manuel Antonio is absolutely brimming with life and Tortuguero National Park is teeming with brightly coloured birds in the trees whilst crocodiles might bathe on the coast. Corcovado National Park offers some wonderfully authentic beach camping experiences where you can snorkel and surf as well as make use of Costa Rica’s ‘all terrain vehicles’ - horses! Of course, tracking the primates is a must, and the four intriguingly diverse species can be found in the different National Park areas; Central American Squirrel Monkeys, White-Headed Capuchins, Mantled Howlers and Geoffroy’s Spider Monkey. The slow moving sloths are a popular favourite with kids as they lounge around in trees, feasting on leaves and watching the world go by and the bright amphibians are a guaranteed crowd pleaser. If you’re happy for the kids to stay up a little later, take them to Refugio Nacional de Fauna Silvestre to watch the turtles lay there eggs, or even see them hatching and the little turtles making their first trip to the ocean.
Costa Rica is a laid back country, an oasis of calm in our ever changing world. The locals, or ‘Ticos’ are friendly and welcoming to children and there is no army. When it comes to accommodation in Costa Rica there is a huge variety of places that will cater for children, whether you want to spend time together or head out alone, safe in the knowledge that your children are happily entertained.
So whether you want a wild experience or something chilled out, Costa Rica is the ideal location across the board. With raging rivers and calming hot springs, dense forests and active volcanoes, it is a stunning natural playground and sure to bring out a child-like spark in any visitor, no matter what age.
