Borneo Family Holidays and Safaris

A Selection of Specially Adapted Safaris and Holidays to Borneo...

The infrastructure and local understanding of a family holiday in Borneo has vastly improved over the last few years, now being one of our top recommendations for a family getaway. Not only are there the cute orang-Family holidays Borneoutans and a wonderfully intriguing culture, but the mysterious steamy jungles and outstanding beaches are guaranteed to get your adventurous little ones in the spirit of things. Safari’s to Borneo can now be just as safe as they are fun, and this enchanting area offers a massive range of activities for children, from wildlife spotting and boat cruises to tree planting and canopy walks.

If your little ones are real wildlife enthusiasts then the variety in Borneo will definitely be enough to satisfy. The obvious major attraction in is the bright and friendly orang-utans and not only can you experience them in the wild, but also in the Sepilok Orang-utan Sanctuary where, if you time it right, you can watch these wonderful primates at feeding time (food is deliberately boring to encourage them to fend for themselves). Built in 1964 to rehabilitate orphan orang-utans, there are about 60 to 80 living here and it is a marvellous spot to watch them go about their daily business, learning the skills they will need throughout their lives. A cruise down the Kinabatangan River on the way is a fantastic way to meet more wildlife and they will definitely love the loud, wonderfully weird proboscis monkeys, as well as pygmy elephants, monitor lizards, otters, hornbills and macaques. Danum Valley is teeming with bird life and a great way to get kids inspired by the wonder of nature.

Not only is there the wildlife of Borneo, but some spectacular island beaches and beautiful marine life. Lankayan Island is great for a bit of relaxation with the family after an adventurous safari and, if you time it right, you can watch the turtles nest and lay eggs here, as they do every year. If you are here around August it is highly likely that you will actually get to watch the babies hatch, or take their first wobbly steps to the big, wide ocean.

Travel times in Borneo do vary and drives, such as from Danum to Sandakan can take up to 5 hours if you go by car. There are, however, flight options to reduce the times and make them much more manageable for families with children, getting the boring stuff out of the way to squeeze in some more adventure.

Borneo is a truly enchanting destination, for adults and children alike, with forests and jungles to explore and white sandy beaches to relax. There is a whole host of adventurous activities, such as canopy walks, for children to join in with and the wildlife sightings will stay with them for a lifetime. We have created some sample itineraries below, which are both rewarding and fun for all the family, great for budding naturalists.
